Marvelous Mixer in Long BeachWhat a great way to start the New Year! Friday, January 9 – Our first "Merger Mixer" of 2009 was a huge success, thanks to our consummate host Ron Diaz (NW LAX, shown at left). There was great food and stimulating conversation, especially surrounding a recent report from Delta's "Seniority Integration Committee."
We also discussed scheduling awards and the exhaustive efforts Delta flight attendants must pursue to correct simple mistakes in trip assignments. Council 98 members explained how we may request a "review of crew orders" as specified in Section 6.F. of our contract and – should no immediate agreement be reached between the scheduler and flight attendant – our union representatives may file a grievance on our behalf.
Here are a few photos of this event. . . showing just how much fun you missed!

Holiday Cheer in Orange CountyCouncil 98 was thrilled to hear that a Delta and Northwest flight attendant would host another "Merger Mixer" prior to a representation election, this time in Orange County. This spur-of-the-moment event was generously hosted by DL's Trish Dawdy and NW's Patrick "Ozzie" Osgood, who put on quite a spread for their guests!
While in Irvine, flight attendants discussed the differences between Delta "policy" and our legally binding contract in many aspects of our work life: from health insurance benefits to retirement, representation at manager meetings to grievance arbitrations, there is still a lot to learn about what life could be like at the "new Delta" without the protections of the world's largest flight attendant union at the world's largest airline.
Left to right: host Trish Dawdy (DL-LAX), organizing campaign California State Chair Maureen Vieck (NW-LAX) and Sachiko Tanaka (DL-NYC) discuss differences in scheduling and duty rigs.
Co-host Patrick "Ozzie" Osgood (NW-LAX) and Delta flight attendant/Seniority Integration Committee member Rick Smaglo (DL-LAX) read up on our current work rules and legally binding contract language regarding base balancing, transfers and furloughs.
Our holiday cheer is kicking in: "Ozzie" Osgood, Trish Dawdy, Rick Smaglo, Maureen Vieck, Elisabeth Joyce and Sachiko Tanaka show flight attendant unity and spirit in Orange County.
Master Executive Council Comes to LAXDelta Flight Attendants Mingle with Council 98 Members
Council 98 had the pleasure of hosting our Master Executive Council at the LAX Crowne Plaza on November 12 and 13. Delta flight attendants joined the discussion at our Local Executive Council meeting on November 13, providing insight into the tactics management has used in the past to persuade Delta employees not to seek a voice at the table, even in uncertain economic times. We thank our colleagues at Delta for their continued inspiration as we struggle to help win them union representation for the first time – and to keep our over 60 years of collective bargaining intact.

Where Were YOU? Pictured at left are members of LAX Council 98 and our great new friends from Delta.
We've enjoyed getting to know our flying partners before we actually start working together.

The Sun Sets on our Merger Mixer in Palm Springs. . . Council 98 thanks our gracious hosts, Travis Mask and Rick Goldstein, for their hospitality. We had a great turnout and a wonderful time getting to know our Delta colleagues at this casual event. We discussed the benefits of having a negotiated union contract for an uncertain future post-merger and learned a lot about life at Delta without AFA representation.
Thanks to all who attended! We look forward to seeing everyone soon. Pictured above, left to right: Back Row – AFA Staff Attorney Scott Goodman; Jim Runyan (NW); Todd Sand (NW); Council 98 Secretary Elisabeth Joyce (NW); Veronica Ochoa (DL); Rusty Meyer (DL) Middle Row – Darren Au (DL); Jed Wood (NW); Council 98 President Les Meeks (NW); Gary Tereshkow (NW – SFO); Rick Swisher (NW); our host Travis Mask (NW); Laura Pease (DL) Front Row – Todd and Debbie Westby (NW); Monica Keim (NW); Steve Guarnaschelli (DL); Ted Reeve (NW)

Destination: Representation. Now can we eat?

The group discusses the expected merger timeline, pension differences, health care benefits and the Employee Free Choice Act.
"Who wants AFA representation?" "I do!"
Delta flight attendant Steve Guarnaschelli casts his vote early.
